This was painted by James Guthrie (one of the Glasgow Boys) in 1883. It caught my eye while watching a programme on Scottish Portrait Painters. I love this painting. The girl could almost walk out of the scene, she looks so three dimensional. The way the artist has used his brush to create the texture and shading of the child's clothes, the contrast of the pale bodice against the darkness of her skin and hair, the simple country scene, it all works so well and really drew me in to the painting.
A hind is the name given to a farm labourer in Scotland and the artist has caught this young girl in the act of cutting a few cabbages.
This painting is currently on display in The National Galleries of Scotland
