There's a part of Winston Churchill's D-Day speech that never fails to make my spine tingle and to feel all patriotic
"...we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender..."
This weekend we are commemorating the 70th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk. 50 of the original "little ships" have returned to Dunkirk this week as part of these commemorations. Maybe you have to be British (or French) to feel particularly moved by any of this. I was moved that young children in France are very much involved each year in marking the occasion. They are very knowledgeable about what took place 70 years ago and proud of their country. They know that enormous sacrifices were made in order that they could be free. I would like to think that children in this country are as knowledgeable because they will be the ones responsible for passing it on to the next generation.
